Good morning, dear reader. I just wanted to take a moment to share with you the email that I have just sent to one of my Senators. My letter was written in response to this article. You may want to skim it first (it’s short, I promise) to grab the context of the letter. Activism and social responsibility are important to me, so I thought this was worth an entry.
Good Day, Senator Corker,
I have just read that you recently decided that your meeting with Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor was not important enough to allow her the few extra minutes necessary to arrive due to her recent injury. While I realize that there is only the narrowest of chances that you would choose to support her nomination anyway, such a brazen show of disrespect for this intelligent, insightful judge cannot go unmentioned.
Sir, you are my representative. We often disagree, but you were elected to represent me. You were elected to represent my family. You were elected to represent my community. You do each of us a disservice by so rudely comporting yourself and by allowing yourself to make decisions based on nothing but ignorance and political affiliation – which, to the best of my judgment, will be all to have to rely upon when the time comes to cast your vote regarding Judge Sotomayor’s confirmation since you chose not to meet with her.
While I would very much like to see you support Judge Sotomayor during her confirmation process, it is more important to me that you, Senator, make an educated decision regarding this and all decisions that come before you in the course of your duties. It is essential that all members of Congress act from a place of knowledge and careful forethought while performing the daily legislative duties of our nation.
In the future, Senator, please refrain from hollow acts of showmanship that disrespect not only the men and women around you but also the electorate you have been chosen to serve. We deserve better, sir.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
So, what do you think?
Until next time, take care of each other.

UPDATE: I claim no responsibility for this whatsoever (but, gee, don’t I wish I could, just a little bit?), but according to this new article, Senator Corker has rescheduled his meeting with Judge Sotomayor. Given the timeline of events and press releases, I was probably lecturing him after he had rescheduled; but, hey, if his staff isn’t going to make his schedule known, he deserves a little grief. He is, after all, a public servant. Supposedly.
